What Makes the Perfect Mud Room + Father's Day According to Tim

Mud Rooms can be a great space for shoes, coats and extra storage but what if yours is falling short of sparking joy? And what if you don't have room for one at all? Never fear, you're in the right place to find the best way to make your space super efficient.

Even if you only have a few feet of space to hang coats, put on shoes and store outdoor gear, you can make it feel like part of your home and not just a storage area. Choose finishes and materials that will make you feel like this space is just as intentional as the rest of the your home. In this pretty space by Megan Bachmann Interiors, I love the practical hooks and drawers but the pink velvet pillows make it feel cozy and welcoming too. The wallpaper adds a lot of personality and the stained wood bench is both efficient for sitting to take off your shoes and for storing larger items like bags or backpacks.

Why is this space is a great example of what to do with a Mud Room? Part Laundry Room, part Mud Room, this space is both pretty to look at and as efficient and compact as can be. The horizontal shiplap visually widens the space while the black door gives us a focal point beyond the laundry to elongate the space at the same time. With a well-placed bench under the window and simple wall hooks for coat storage, this modified hall has dual purposes but skimps on neither. Side by side laundry gives you plenty of room for folding and storage above. We're currently designing a laundry room with stacked a washer and dryer to take advantage of the height of the room. Then we'll build in a tall, narrow cabinet for storing an ironing board that pivots to fold out into the room.

And what to do it you literally don't have room for a Mud Room? We don't really have one in our house but we do have an unused office space. Even though it's not directly off the front door, we decided to start using this room for storage of the kids' bikes and sports equipment so that the front door can just store coats and a few pairs of shoes (mostly Tim's since they're too big for our shoe cabinet!) Here, Studio McGee has a simple bench and hooks on the wall but the look is clean and tidy, a look seemingly everyone is drawn to for an entry space. And don't forget that it's not a lack of storage that makes a space feel crowded or messy... it's the stuff! Store only seasonally appropriate clothing and shoes near the door and allow one or two items per person depending on your space. A basket like this one above is perfect as a catch-all and oversize hooks are more forgiving for when you have extra guests or someone didn't get the memo about the two items per person rule.

1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Join Natalie Chay, maker and founder of Wild Sol Jewelry to make your very own pair of The Arches Earrings! Where em’ on the go, every day as a minimalist go-to, in your second or third hole to add a little sparkle; where em’ wherever you like, however you like. They are simplistic, cute, and unique.

In this workshop, you will learn a technique called forging (forming wire through a combination of bending and hammering wire to create and form shape), filing, and how to use wire cutters and flat nose pliers. You will get to choose which stone or bead you desire your Arches Earrings to include. You can make them unique to your aesthetic! Click here to purchase tickets!

Natalie aims to encourage authenticity through creating nature-inspired jewelry designs, inspiring others to connect to their truest selves, and creating a space in her workshops that encourages individuals to connect deeper to themselves through creativity, living in the present, and intentional, meaningful conversation. You will leave feeling inspired and proud of your new found jewelry making skills!

With graduations and Father's Day coming up, unique handmade gifts are always exciting to give and receive. Tim took over our list-making duties this week to tell us what he loves at Domain (which, by the way, makes it easy for me to shop!) Just for my two cents, I'd give that high school or college graduate something special for their new dorm or apartment... maybe a wall planter (so they can keep the air a little cleaner) or a sweet gold or silver leaf map of Baltimore to remember their home state? For that special teacher in your life, our sweet SugarFina treats, locally made candles and our pretty ceramic succulents and coral are perfect ways to show your appreciation for a wonderful school year.
