Why are Gallery Walls so Appealing Yet Also so Intimidating to Create?

Let’s first take a look at what a gallery wall is and why we love them. A curated display of art, photographs, and/or mementos, a gallery wall can reflect your life’s experiences, your personal style and your interests. The tricky part is crafting a gallery wall that not only looks good but feels intimately personal to you.

Behind the Design of The Southern Living Kitchen + Dining Room

When we designed the Southern Living Idea House kitchen and dining room, we wanted each space to have a cozy, familiar feel – one that would be a comfortable backdrop to home cooked meals, special occasions, and everyday moments with family. As the heart of the home, this kitchen was designed to feel warm and welcoming while also addressing the functional needs of a busy family schedule. I designed the custom plaster range hood to imitate a traditional hearth with a soft arch, integrated shelf and full height marble backsplash.

Elevating Your Sleep Experience

As you can imagine, I was very excited for the opportunity to see how our own mattress was handcrafted by the talented team at Stearns & Foster® in their Hagerstown factory. When so few things are crafted by hand (and even fewer in this country), it’s quite the experience to watch. Along the way, I asked loads of questions about the mattresses and, of course, about their sustainable practices … here are a few of the highlights:

Behind The Design of The Songwriter's Studio...

Inspired by the Southern Living home’s location near Nashville, this space plays homage to the musicians and artists who have made this area so special…from the Fisk Jubilee Singers and Willie Nelson to Dolly Parton and Muddy Waters. Located on the lower level of the house, the Songwriter’s Studio (along with the adjacent rooms) is purposefully darker and moodier.

Behind the Design of The Twin Bedroom + DIY Inspiration

The best thing about our Southern Living Idea House (as a whole) is that we made sure to incorporate at least one great idea that we loved into every room. We included lots of ideas in this children’s bedroom, from custom built-in beds to DIY paneled cork walls. My favorite moments here are the fabric wall panels (upholstered by our team!), custom built-in desks, beautiful window bench cushions with recycled Thibaut golden velvet that just glows in the afternoon sun, built-in custom day beds with deep green velvet headboards made by Tangled Threads and the lofted ceiling with a sweet, bubbled chandelier by Regina Andrew.

Southern Living Idea House + Behind the Design of Our Favorite Breakfast Room

The initial design of the Breakfast Room blossomed from our idea to have a custom mural inspired by the natural landscape around the home. We pulled the color palette from the surrounding gardens and softened and muted the colors to create a tone-on-tone design that feels timeless and beautiful. Beautifully brought to life by the talented Lenehan Studios, the mural envelops you and creates an immersive feeling in this intimate space. Coated in a soft sage from the mural’s color palette, our new cabinetry collection with Unique Kitchens and Baths is set back into an arched niche with a deep green ceramic tile backsplash and an Imperial Danby marble countertop sourced from Vermont.

In Search of the Perfect Night’s Rest

Bedrooms are one of my favorite spaces to design because they truly blend both form and function. A bedroom should be a beautiful retreat that encourages rest and renewal, so every detail matters. Sleep is such an intimate and personal experience… whether you prefer to be warm or cool, softly cradled or firmly supported, if you need a cocoon-like room with black out shades or to wake up with the sun. All of these specifics are part of the design planning, but underneath it all must be a mattress that offers quality, comfort and longevity.
