All Things Florals: Q+A with Laura

Walnut Hill Project | Photography: Jennifer Hughes

One of our favorite aspects of styling spaces for photoshoots and install days would have to be florals – we love incorporating fresh flowers and cuttings into our design projects. They just have a way of making the space feel a bit more personable, light, and like “home”. Keep reading for a little Q+A with Laura on all things florals…

What are some of your favorite / go-to flowers for styling at photoshoots?

I always love incorporating hydrangeas, peonies and tulips in our design projects. Including a pop of color through florals is one of our favorite ways to create a simple, light and fun statement to a space.

How do you achieve an effortless “just-picked” look for your arrangements?

We love incorporating in a mix of flowers and herb cuttings into our projects. Recently, at one of our “secret” Baltimore projects, we assembled some cuttings in the kitchen that were a mixture of baby’s breath and herbs (fresh basil, rosemary sprigs, etc.) It created a fresh picked garden to table look. We also love creating a “just-picked” look by cutting florals to slightly different heights.

Where do you get your vases / jars for floral arrangements?

We love using both vintage + secondhand glass vases, as well as local vases from artists and vendors that we carry in Domain. Hollow Works Ceramics is one of our favorites that we almost always incorporate in our design projects and fill with fresh cuttings. Clear glass is perfect for a light and airy arrangement while solid, opaque vases help larger cuttings and branches feel grounded and make more of a design statement.

If you had to choose, what flower(s) would you always want arranged in your house?

My favorite flowers would have to be white hydrangeas, anemones, ranunculus and peonies. If you look back at our design projects, you will see a mix of these throughout our spaces, too! Whenever possible, we also love foraging greenery and flowers from the grounds of our projects so the arrangements feel like an extension of the garden.

What are some tips for creating a floral centerpiece for a dining room?

When decorating a dining table with florals, I think it’s important to create a sense of drama while connecting back to the home’s design and gardens. For example, at our Oxford Project, we incorporated fresh cuttings from the grounds to bring in the outdoors. At other projects, we choose colorful florals to accentuate a home’s neutral palette or sinuous branches to feel dramatic in an open space.
