Are You Ready for the One Room Challenge?

We all have that one room that seems to always be such a challenge to tackle... you know the one, I can see that you're thinking about it right now! Well, we're excited to be participating in the One Room Challenge this fall, a widely anticipated biannual event that takes place every April and October. Each round, twenty design influencers are selected to take the challenge, as Featured Designers, and transform a space. This year, for a new take on the challenge, all of the room designs will be virtual! Check in with us every Wednesday on Instagram and Facebook, as well as our newsletter and blog, as we document our process while sharing our sources and professional advice!

If you want to follow along and work on that challenging room, tag us in your social media posts so we can see your progress!

This time around, the One Room Challenge is partnering with High Point Furniture Market so, as a featured designer, I'll be showing you not only our design process but also how we source great furniture from the beautiful showrooms we visit every spring and fall in the hometown of American furniture, High Point, North Carolina.

Today I'm happy to introduce you to our One Room Challenge project: A beautiful living room flanked by large windows on two sides and featuring a central fireplace and high ceilings. Who is the client for this virtual room design? Well, since we can choose any dream client for this virtual design (and they will have no idea!)... our virtual client is Oprah! Oprah is looking for a space to entertain friends and family but she also wants it to feel like a space she'll want to just sit and read a good book.

When we first meet with our new clients, we always ask them to share their Pinterest board and answer a Style Questionnaire so we can get a feel for their design aesthetic. Since Oprah had a super busy schedule this week we had a virtual consultation where she basically said that she loves our style and to just go ahead and do whatever we thought was best. Thanks Oprah! I'm thinking that we'll go a little more modern than she has in her other homes and let the beautiful views really be the focal point. Oprah loves nature and this 1950's property is set in a secluded village with amazing views of the waterfront and lots of trees and foliage.

After we meet with our clients for an initial consultation, our first step when designing an existing space is to measure the room so we can create a floor plan. Here is the floor plan of the 20 foot x 20 foot space we'll be designing for Oprah's new virtual home and next week we'll share our inspiration images and mood board for this gorgeous room. We've got some great ideas to take advantage of the gorgeous architecture, natural light and views plus some tips on how to design more sustainably. Oprah told us that she's very excited! (Not really, but I feel like she would be, don't you?)

Meanwhile... back in the real world, we're very happy to announce that Domain is open again! Today is our first day back after being closed since March (but always online!) and we have a wonderful new shop manager, Madison, who is excited to meet you! (Rachel is still with us, she's just at home looking after her sweet newborn baby boy! Congratulations Rachel!)

We hope you'll come and visit us soon to see what's new, like all of these lovelies:

ps: In case you're wondering, the One Room Challenge is entirely virtual this time so no, unfortunately, we are not really designing a room for Oprah... well, it is a room for Oprah but not technically FOR Oprah. It could be for her eventually though, we can leave that option on the table. :)
