It's The Final Reveal Of Our One Room Challenge + Design Chats Is Live!
It's finally time to show you our finished design plan for our virtual One Room Challenge! If you've been keeping up with our weekly posts and IG stories, you know that we've been "virtually" designing a room for none other than Oprah as part of a bi-annual design event called the One Room Challenge. Over the past 5 weeks we've walked you through our design process from the initial space planning and design inspiration through to sourcing furnishings at High Point Market and now we're ready to give you the big reveal! We're very honored and appreciative to have partnered with Duke Renders, an interior design rendering company that truly brings designs to life! If you're a designer or architect just let them know that you heard about them here and you'll receive a special discount on your first rendering!
Let's take a quick look back at the floor plan and I'll show you how we explain our designs to our clients and also to our renderer so they can bring our designs to life. Below you'll see our furniture plan with all of the furnishings detailed as well as an elevation drawing of the custom designed built-in cabinetry with caned drawer fronts and the new limestone fireplace surround.
While we're planning a design, we work out the furniture and all design elements by pulling everything together into a design board. It's important to see everything together in one place so we can make sure the proportions, materials, textures and colors are correct and that they're complimentary without competing with each other. Here's our design board for Oprah's living room as well as a layout to show Duke Renders which camera angles we wanted to show you and examples of the materials and finishes. The walls are painted with an organic and highly breathable lime wash paint from Portola Paints. This lime wash paint contains zero VOCs and creates a beautiful patina that gives instant character to a room.
And now, drum roll, please... it's time for the final reveal of our One Room Challenge for Oprah's virtual living room!
I think Oprah would love how warm and welcoming this room feels with plenty of seating for friends and family, plus a cozy reading nook on the window bench. Two comfy sofas flank the new limestone fireplace with sculptural armchairs in a gray tweed, all from Verellen, a stylish and sustainable furniture brand we love. At High Point Market after we visited Verellen, we found these fabulous stools by Lee Industries, another one of our go-to sustainable furniture sources, and this gorgeous area rug from Lavender Oriental Carpets. We love finding well designed lighting and were so happy to find this beautiful shaded floor lamp by Visual Comfort and a modern, linear chandelier by Generation Lighting. If you're wondering about that amazing fiber art on the side wall, we found that on the Etsy marketplace from Studionom based in The Netherlands.
Whew, that was a long but also somehow super fast six weeks! And we weren't alone in this challenge, check out our fellow ORC designers and give them a follow on Instagram to see all of their fabulous designs!
I hope you enjoyed learning a bit more about our design process and if you have any questions you can send them to us via Direct Message on Instagram.
