Southern Living Idea House + Behind the Design of Our Favorite Breakfast Room

We are so excited to share with you that our Southern Living Idea House is officially open for tours (through December) and the magazine hits newsstands today! We loved designing every detail of this newly built home, from the custom cabinetry and interior fixtures and finishes to the textiles, custom designed furniture and original artwork. This project was a journey into what truly makes a house a home and we hope you feel welcome here, finding something within each space that speaks to you.

On Instagram we have been sharing behind-the-scenes of the house, along with DIY ideas and behind-the-design tips within each space. What better way to inspire than through sharing these tips with you through our newsletter + blog, too! This week we will be revealing a closer look behind the design of one of our favorite spaces, the Breakfast Room…

The initial design of the Breakfast Room blossomed from our idea to have a custom mural inspired by the natural landscape around the home. We pulled the color palette from the surrounding gardens and softened and muted the colors to create a tone-on-tone design that feels timeless and beautiful. Beautifully brought to life by the talented Lenehan Studios, the mural envelops you and creates an immersive feeling in this intimate space. Coated in a soft sage from the mural’s color palette, our new cabinetry collection with Unique Kitchens and Baths is set back into an arched niche with a deep green ceramic tile backsplash and an Imperial Danby marble countertop sourced from Vermont.

We love to bring in vintage furnishings whenever we can and it felt like serendipity when we found this antique pine dining table from the Cotswolds in England and paired it with two original Thonet bentwood chairs. The room began to feel very cohesive and curated with our accessories from Domain and we completed the space with gorgeous roman shades by City Shades, a soft woven sisal rug by Fibreworks and custom upholstery by Tangled Threads. In keeping with the sustainability ideas for this house, the bench cushion is made with a beautiful recycled fabric from Kravet.

PS – In honor of Dee Lenehan, this Saturday we’ll be hosting a pop-up at our shop Domain, in Catonsville, MD, and all proceeds will go directly to support her while she takes time off to recover and heal from breast cancer. We will have a selection of her original artwork, handmade jewelry and more, and we can’t wait to see you there to support Dee!
